Between the oak grove and Wildenstein Castle, the castle pond lies somewhat hidden and inaccessible behind a dense thicket. It's an idyllic spot that deserves protection. There's no path to its shore, and that's a good thing, because countless animal species make their home here and appreciate being left in peace. And let's be honest. Would we really like it if every Tom, Dick, and Harry descended on us uninvited, made a lot of noise, and perhaps even left behind a mess? At least there's this: For hikers and walkers, there are two lovely park benches right by the path by the pond, inviting you to linger.

The Ermitage is a large and lovingly designed green area from 1785, with three idyllic ponds, several romantic grottos, historical buildings, pretty walking paths between the shore and the edge of the forest and, on top of it all, the castle ruins of Bierseck Castle, as the crowning glory of the whole. It is a wonderful place for physical and mental relaxation, but those seeking peace and quiet should visit outside of the holidays or weekends. It is a real visitor magnet. Warning! The grottos can only be reached on foot and via steep stairs. The rest of the garden is mostly wheelchair accessible and suitable for pushchairs. There are no parking spaces directly at the Ermitage! Free entry!

The double power plant Augst (operator: 80% KWA 20% Canton Basel Land) and Wyhlen (operator: Energiedienst Holding Laufenburg, majority owned by EnBW since 2003) were built together between 1908 and 1912. The 212.80 m long weir has 10 openings, each with a clear width of 17.50 m. Each opening can be closed by a 9 m high iron gate. These are moved by winches that rest on an iron bridge structure above the pillar heads. A concrete weir bridge on the underwater side serves to reinforce the weir. Weir pillars and supports are clad with Black Forest granite. Until 1990, ten Francis turbine groups on both sides generated 2.2 MW each and two exciter groups each generated 440 kW of electrical energy. Since 1990, two of the former ten Francis turbine groups and two exciter groups have been in operation on the Swiss side; the rest have been replaced by seven built-in Straflo turbine groups, each with an output of 5.54 MW. Since 1990, five of the former ten Francis turbine groups and two exciter groups have still been in operation on the German side; the others have been replaced by six installed Straflo turbine groups. There is also a photovoltaic system on the roof of the KW Wyhlen machine hall with an area of 720 m² and an annual output of approx. 70,000 kWh. Since the end of 2017, a power-to-gas pilot plant for the climate-neutral production of hydrogen using electricity from hydropower has been operating on the Wyhlen power plant site. Somehow there is always a permanent construction site on the power plant here. But also so beautiful to look at and impressive.

In fact, it is not a small lake but a deliberately created pond. The Basel pond was built in 1870. It was intended as a large water reservoir, so to speak as a reserve for the Grellinger water pipe to Basel and was not dug up but simply dammed.

The Hermitage in Arlesheim is a romantic landscape garden based on the English model. It is a place of silence, peace, contemplation, and for some even a place of strength. The meandering, playful paths make you want to discover the various nooks and crannies of the Hermitage. Here you can meet the hermit Brother Klaus or discover small cave entrances. The Hermitage also has a beautifully landscaped pond. The wooden footbridge that leads into the pond invites you to linger. The Hermitage has its charm in every season. It was opened in 1785. There is so much to say and learn about the Hermitage that it is worth taking part in one of the regular tours. Ask the Arlesheim Tourist Office or the "Friends of the Hermitage" association. Towards the end of the 18th century, the largest English garden in Switzerland was created on the Birseck castle hill. English gardens combine the natural landscape with artificial elements that are based on nature. Observation platforms, waterfalls, suspension bridges and hermits' cells were created, which were connected by winding paths. Even in ancient times, the area around the Ermitage was apparently a sacred landscape. Finds in the caves prove that this area was already inhabited in the Stone Age. "The sensitive people who live close to nature must have always noticed the high vibrations at the Ermitage, which is why it can be assumed that the hill with its caves has been the home of wise women and men for thousands of years." And even today, a secret hovers over the landscape. There are intense power spots right next to the grotto complex in the entrance area, at the rock overhang at the carousel square or on the square of the Temple Rustique. These are the power spots whose vibrations help to open the inner eyes. The Ermitage has become a true place of pilgrimage for many who know the importance of such places and appreciate their influence. Source: Pier Hänni, Magical Jura. The Ermitage monument landscape includes the English landscape garden, the Birseck castle complex, the mill complex and the forest houses. The Ermitage was designed and developed in three phases (1785, 1793, 1812) according to different concepts: The first complex from 1785 was based on the ideal of the unspoiled natural landscape, in which nature was left as a spiritual universal power in the sense of Rousseau without artificial intervention.
