Today the Witches Tower serves as Sarnen's historical archive. It was originally part of a larger castle complex, the so-called "Lower Sarnen Castle". In the 13th century this castle was owned by the Obwalden knight dynasty of the Sarnen waiters, who built the tower around 1285 according to dendrochronological dating.

With two buildings and some remains of ruins, the park is freely accessible above Sarnen.

Landenberg Castle, located above the village of Sarnen, is the landmark and the actual historical center of the canton of Obwalden. The rifle house and the former armory are suitable for cultural events, exhibitions, family celebrations, birthdays or wedding receptions. From the 11th to the beginning of the 13th century, one of the largest castles in Central Switzerland rose on the prominent hill and was no longer inhabited by the end of the 13th century. All that remains of the original Landenberg castle complex is the remains of the surrounding wall. The annual Landsgemeinde met on the Landenberg from 1646 to 1998. The rifle house and armory have been on Landenberg since the 18th century. The castle hill and the buildings on the Landenberg are owned by the canton of Obwalden. In 1978 the association "Pro Landenberg" was founded with the aim of managing the buildings on the Landenberg in trust and making the premises available to the population for cultural and social events.

A large ruin with a barbecue area, a large meadow and a unique all-round view! The walls are usually no higher than the hip, but are broadly distributed across the area.

Worth the minor detour.
