It's an easy ride from the beatiful Kőrös rivers to one of the biggest residences of the late Wenckheim family. It goes through the main street of Békéscsaba on a cozy bicycle road with cafés, small rivers, cultural events and exhibitions (it's worth visiting the Munkácsy museum).

I have shared several pictures, although some of them were only taken in or from the castle. The road and places leading there also belong to the castle, so I have uploaded some of them. The castle can be reached from Dobó Square, across the bridge, going straight up the street lined with shops, wine bars and restaurants. The rest speaks for itself.

Wenckheim Castle Gerla is a historically significant Romantic-Baroque mansion, crafted by Miklós Ybl and built for the Wenckheim family. Despite its architectural beauty and original chapel restoration, much of it stands in a dilapidated, privately owned state. Grassroots preservation efforts and potential adaptive reuse provide hope, but major funding and commitment will be essential to bring it back to life. It can be reached via several hiking trails from both Békéscsaba and Gyula, and there is also a well-developed cycling path leading here.

The road leading to the castle is a bit steep, so be careful in snowy or wet weather. The remains of the castle are not fenced off, so be careful if you are afraid of the outdoors!

The Weinckheim Castle in Szabadkígyós is one of the most beautiful hiking spots in the Alföld. It can be approached from the direction of Békéscsaba on a high-quality bicycle path.

A castle that has been derelict since the war, which only reminds of its former self in details. The park and lake with beautiful trees around it is worth a walk.
