WILHELMSTHAL CASTLE AND PARK Wilhelmsthal Castle is an ensemble of several free-standing buildings of different construction times in the middle of an extensive landscape park. As a corps de logis, the Old Castle is the central building of the castle complex. It was built around 1700 as a hunting lodge for the ducal house of Saxony-Eisenach in place of older hunting quarters and was supplemented a little later by a series of pavilion buildings and a baroque garden. After Wilhelmsthal fell to Saxony-Weimar in 1741, Duke Ernst August I had the castle partially rebuilt by the architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne, and some rooms in the Old Castle were re-stuccoed. Towards the end of the 18th century, Duke Carl August began to create a landscape park. The New Palace was also built. The redesign of the park in the 19th century was planned and implemented by Hermann Fürst von Pückler Muskau and the court gardener Hermann Jäger. Wilhelmsthal Palace served as a summer residence for the Weimar ducal family until the 20th century. (…from information board)
