The “Mainaue bei Augsfeld” nature reserve is an important European breeding area for native bird species and a resting area for migratory birds. Natural, nutrient-rich lakes have formed in the area of former river loops, which were separated by the dynamics of the river. The Aurach valley section between Unterschleichach and Tretzendorf was designated a nature reserve in 1993 with a size of 201 hectares.
