The village pond in Brunstorf is idyllically located near the church. It's a perfect place to linger.

When the glaciers of the last ice age retreated northwards, the meltwater flows through the Delvenau meltwater channel drained south into the Elbe. A watershed formed on the terminal moraine chains near Mölln, from which the Delvenau continued to flow southwards and the Stecknitz to the north into the Trave. For 500 years, these two watercourses with a connecting canal as the Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal were mainly used for the transport of salt from Lüneburg to the Baltic Sea region. When the Elbe-Lübeck Canal was built around 1900, the entire Stecknitz became part of it. There is only a small remnant of the Delvenau. Instead, new bodies of water have been created through the gravel extraction. The moon bird or moon spot (Phalera bucephala) is a moth from the tooth spinner family. Its caterpillars feed on the numerous tree species, including to Salix caprea. The Sal willow (Salix caprea) is an important first fodder plant for insects such as honey bees, wild bees and bumblebees due to its early flowering period from the beginning of March. Despite this deterioration in the water regime, subsidence in the wet meadows and a reduction in biodiversity, this area from Büchen to Lauenburg has been placed under protection, first as an NSG, then the stream itself with 10 m of marginal strips as an FFH area because of its two species of fish that are worthy of protection. the loach and the mud peacock. The bench by the idyllic village pond invites you to take a break. Many carp swim in the village pond, which are traditionally caught with a net the day before the day of penance and prayer. Only the big carp over 2 kilos stay outside and are prepared for the big carp meal in Bruhn's Gasthof. The little fish come back into the pond.

There are some places on the old harbor basin where two and four-legged friends can cool off. My guess is that the port dates from the time when large gravel and sand pits were active in this area. Because whole shiploads were then transported through the canal e.g. promoted to Hamburg. Unfortunately, nothing can be found on the Internet 🙁

Gravel pits are often seen as overexploitation of nature or simply as environmental destruction. In view of the upheaval of an area, this view is understandable - but it falls far short. Because the visible incisions in the landscape are always only "temporary scars". Extensive renaturation measures (in the case of the plant in Groß Pampau with its impressive gravel lake, for example, the creation of shallow water zones for fish and water birds) and the self-healing powers of nature that quickly set in after gravel mining have ended together create a habitat for animals and plants that have long since disappeared from the scene elsewhere. Disused gravel pits therefore represent valuable retreats that should be welcome to every nature lover. https://www.kieswerke-ohle-lau.de/umwelt/

The hiking trail runs along both sides of the former harbor bay and offers beautiful views. The street that leads here is called Hafenstraße. You can no longer see a harbor here, but you can only imagine what it used to look like here. When the long-destroyed air force fuel depot still existed nearby, the harbor on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal was certainly more important; the proximity to the railway line also makes it ideal for a harbor facility.
