The Oldenstäder See is a very pretty, medium-sized lake. There is a circular route on which you can go around the lake on foot or by bike. There are some areas with a sandy beach, including a beach area for dogs (is signposted as "dog beach". There is also a kiosk, but it is probably only open in the summer months, I was there on March 7th (during a bike ride from Dannenberg to Uelzen and back), the kiosk was closed. It looked a bit dreary at the time of year. But I will definitely cycle there again in spring or summer.

Eine erneute Sandentnahme für den Bau der Ortsumgehung in den 1990er-Jahren ließ den Baggersee auf seine heutige Fläche von etwa 90 Hektar anwachsen. Die maximale Tiefe beträgt ca. 7 Meter. Gespeist wird der See mit Grundwasser. Eingerahmt von herrlich grünem Baumbestand und natürlicher Vegetation, hat sich der Oldenstädter See zu einem beliebten Bade- und Freizeitsee entwickelt, dessen Fläche sich auf einen Badebereich mit zwei Strandabschnitten, einen Surfbereich und ein Natur-Biotop aufteilt. Das Ufer wird von natürlichem Schilf gesäumt. Um den See verläuft ein malerischer Rundweg, der zu gemütlichen Spaziergängen oder Radtouren einlädt. Das Naherholungsgebiet zieht Besucher aus der Stadt Uelzen wie auch aus den angrenzenden Orten Barum, Emmendorf, Oetzen und Rätzingen im Sommer wie im Winter an. Regelmäßige Untersuchungen durch das Gesundheitsamt der Stadt Uelzen bescheinigen dem Oldenstädter See nahezu jedes Jahr eine ausgezeichnete Wasserqualität. Der weitläufige Naturstrand im Badebereich erlaubt ungetrübtes Sonnenbaden, Entspannen und den Sprung ins kühle Nass zum ausgiebigen Schwimmen und Planschen an heißen Sommertagen. Im südwestlichen Seebereich ist ein eigener Hundestrand ausgewiesen. Offiziell gibt es zwar keinen FKK-Bereich am Badesee, es finden sich jedoch am Westufer sowie am Nord-Ost-Ufer einige Plätze, an denen Nacktbaden toleriert wird. Surfen und das Befahren mit kleinen Booten ohne Motor ist im Bereich für den Wassersport möglich. Der See verfügt über eine Grillhütte, die mit Genehmigung der Stadt genutzt werden kann, sanitäre Anlagen, einen Kiosk für die Verpflegung mit Snacks, Kaffee, Eis und Süßigkeiten sowie Parkmöglichkeiten. Am Oldenstädter See befindet sich zudem das historische Rauchhaus als Backsteinbau mit Reetdach, in dem verschiedene Veranstaltungen durchgeführt werden. Im Winter stehen Eishockey-Spiel und Schlittenfahren am Rodelberg auf dem Programm.
