8月 27, 2025, Rosenkranz–Rudbøl Border Crossing
Without a sign, you wouldn't notice that you're walking into another country... It's nice how easy this can be these days.

It is only a few kilometers from Dagebüll harbor and you reach a district of Dagebüll: Fahretoft. A lovely place with lots of little thatched-roof houses on mounds. Lots of nature awaits you and if you drive a little further you will reach the Bottschloter Lake. This little spot on earth is wonderfully recommended for hikes and bike tours. https://www.dagebuell-tourismus.de/vor-ort-umgebung/orte/fahretoft

When the province of Schleswig-Holstein was divided between Denmark and Germany after the Schleswig referendum in 1920, the new border ran through Rudbøl, dividing the town into Danish and German parts. In Rudbøl is boundary stone no. 245. This is in the middle of the road that leads from Germany to Denmark. To the west of the road is the Danish side of the border, to the east is the German side. Rudbøl originally had three inns, two of which are still in use. The Grænsekro inn has existed in the village since 1711, which has bought a few houses and rents them out as holiday apartments. There is a campsite next to the inn. There is also a youth hostel in Rudbøl. On today's German side there is the former Rosenkranz Kro, which is now called Alter Deutscher Grenzkrug and is located in the Rosenkranz district of the municipality of Aventoft.

Great track to pick up some speed in a westerly wind. But beware: drive carefully in the wet. The dike path slopes down to the water.

11月 15, 2021, Fething Rainwater Pond
Fething (North Frisian: di / jü Feeding) is a special water storage basin on the Halligen and terps in the marshland on the German and Dutch North Sea coasts. Fethinge are rainwater collecting basins that were usually used as cattle troughs and give the impression of a normal pond. Mostly they were created at the highest point, i.e. in the middle of the Hallig or Terft. Since the surface water of the meadows and thus possibly also dung could get into Fethinge, they were usually not suitable as reservoirs for drinking water. For this purpose, a separate cistern, the so-called Sood, was created, in which the rainwater from the roofs could collect. Drinking water was a precious commodity on the Halligen and in the marshland. Due to the island location and the small size of a Hallig, even the groundwater consists of salt water. The Fethinge only lost its task in the middle of the 20th century when the water supply was gradually expanded. In the meantime, the still existing fethings have been placed under monument protection. Source: Wikipedia

10月 27, 2021, Rosenkranz–Rudbøl Border Crossing
The Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is probably one of the most beautiful of the Germany-Denmark border crossings. And one of the most unusual. Because here the border runs for a length of 130 meters in the middle of the road and then right through Ruttebüller Lake (Rudbøl Sjø). The road that winds between the houses to the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing is narrow. This unusual border town is located near the west coast and near the Emil Nolde Foundation in Neukirchen. On the road, pedestrians are constantly looking for the embedded border markers. So you don't know exactly whether you are in Germany or Denmark, and the border runs partly between the houses in a westerly direction. But why was the border drawn this way at the Rosenkranz-Rudbøl border crossing? One explanation describes the personal wish of the house owners on the western side to belong to Denmark. In fact, part of the border runs between the properties. The other version says that the planned border should have run right through the Old German Border Krog and so it was agreed that the border should be in the middle of the road. The most likely scenario, however, is that the Ruttebüller See was to be allocated half to both countries in order to give the rush cutters and fishermen equal opportunities. The western Koog, however, should definitely belong to Denmark and so it was agreed that the border between Denmark and Germany should run along the middle of the top of the dike towards the Koog. And this very top of the dike is the road. The border itself is marked with buoys on the Ruttebüller See. https://mare.photo/grenzuebergang-rosenkranz/

The German part of the North Sea Coastal Cycle Route ends here and the Danish part begins. Or the other way around ;-)...

Small lake with a public bathing area. You can walk from the Nolde Museum to the lake on a well-tended hiking trail, we pushed our bikes there and then continued our bike tour.
