The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1356.

The first documented mention of the name Greiz appears in a document from 1209, in which castle guards from Greiz are listed. It can be assumed that the Greiz castle was built much earlier. Evidence of this is the double chapel rediscovered during the ongoing restoration work and dendrochronological dating from 1188. This exceptionally significant finding lets the importance of the Greiz castle complex in the 12th century appear in a completely new light.
