The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1356.

The first documented mention of a town hall in Greiz was in 1564. In 1610 it fell victim to a fire and was immediately rebuilt. The tower with the clock was added to the building in 1641. The old town hall was destroyed in the great city riot of 1802. It took until the 1840s for it to be rebuilt. The current building in the neo-Gothic style, with its striking square tower and pinnacles (Gothic spires), was rebuilt between 1840 and 1842 and supplemented in 1909 by an extension that now houses the large meeting room and other rooms.
