Ore used to be mined here... There is a rest area in front of the tunnel

"...We now follow the Moselsteig and walk through the forest again (this time on wider paths). In between we get a few opportunities to enjoy a wonderful view of Eltz Castle. We continue along forest paths until we reach the former forester's house Rotherhof. There are no places to stop here, but at least tree trunks lying by the side of the path offer us a place to sit. So we take a short break with a view of the nice-looking forester's house..." Find out more about our idyllic hike to Eltz Castle at: https://www.netreisetagebuch.de/burg-eltz-wandern/

This is a site that was inhabited by people thousands of years ago, as can be proven by archaeological finds. Visitors of our modern times are invited to stay at least for a short time. Some will certainly be happy to take advantage of the opportunity offered here after the climb.

To be honest, the name leaves me a little perplexed: why did someone back then come up with the - to me incomprehensible - idea of naming an ore mine in the Hunsrück after the deity Apollo from Greek mythology, and the god of the sea at that?

When the hiker reaches this farm on the Moselsteig path towards the mouth of Koblenz on the stage from Treis-Karden to Moselkern, Eltz Castle is not yet in sight, but a large part of this high point of the tour has been made. Now it goes downhill along forest paths, at first leisurely, later steeper. When the flow of tourists increases, Burg Eltz gets closer :-)

One of the most beautiful rest areas I have visited so far. There is a great bench with a table in the shade. There is room for a lot of hikers there. Great designed. There is also a sun lounger.

You should have seen the most original resting place on the Moselle. With the right local wine ... 😉

The Apollo Mine (1858 - 1941) The actual development of the mining field did not take place until 1891. In the decades that followed, work was only carried out here sporadically. In 1909 an explosives storage room was built in the tunnel, which is still very well preserved today. In 1917 rails were laid in the already 140m long tunnel. By 1920, when the pit was closed due to lack of funds, 110 tons of ore had been mined. At that time 13 workers were employed here. The following period of operation lasted from 1937 to 1941. The ore veins were around 0.2 m thick, irregular and discontinuous. In 1939 the pit was auctioned off and went to Stolberg Zink AG based in Aachen for 500 Reichsmarks. After a short period of operation, the Apollo mine finally came to an end in 1941. Source: text information board

The hillside settlement on the "Burgberg" near Mastershausen - Part 2 The late Roman defense program developed to protect against the Germanic invasions provided for smaller fortresses that could be better defended with fewer soldiers. In addition to exclusively military facilities, there were numerous refuges for the local population along the deeply cut Moselle valleys, mostly on a prominent spur. Today these strategically located fortifications are mostly overlaid by medieval castles. Roman coin finds prove an activity on the castle hill from the 2nd half of the 3rd century. AD to the beginning of the 5th century. Noteworthy are weapons and belt fittings that could indicate the presence of the Roman military. The castle hill not only had a protective function. Numerous metal slags indicate metal processing. It remains to be seen whether iron ore extraction in smelting furnaces began in Roman times or whether it goes back to medieval activities. Medieval wall remains show that the castle hill was important for a long period of time. Below the western flank of the mountain plateau there is a shaft, 2 m in diameter and 3 m deep, buried in the slate rock. After drilling, a depth of over 13m can be assumed. Presumably this shaft is related to the medieval mining on Burgberg. The castle hill, which is important for local history, is now under excavation protection to protect the findings and finds. The hillside settlement on the "Burgberg" near Mastershausen Part-1 To the north-west of Mastershausen, a narrow mountain spur, the so-called "Burgberg", rises above deeply cut stream valleys. Steep slate rock walls favored the fortification of the 50 long and 30 m wide mountain plateau. At the narrowest point, a mighty 8m deep ditch cuts through the mountain tongue. About 20m south of the section trench, another trench can be seen, largely destroyed by modern road construction measures. A natural hill rises between the two trenches. It is still uncertain today who laid the terrace areas and post pits for wooden buildings visible on the mountain plateau. So far, no archaeological excavations have taken place on the castle hill. The only possible access was in the east via a ramp-like slate rock. The mountain plateau was already settled in pre-Roman times. A Celtic silver coin from the middle of the L. Century BC BC shows a sitting figure looking back to the right on the obverse of the coin. "A palmette-shaped object protrudes from the region of the abdomen, a snake winds at the feet of the figure, and along the back of the figure there is a curved rod on the right edge". Celtic warriors had on their campaigns in the Mediterranean during the 3rd century BC. BC brought Greek coins. The money economy common in the Mediterranean area was adopted by the Celts. The protected location of the castle hill offered the local population an opportunity to retreat in times of crisis. Since the 3rd century AD, the population close to the border on the Middle Rhine and Moselle lived in constant danger of threatened Germanic attacks. Source: Text information board

The castle hill The name Burgberg (popularly also called Burgkopf) indicates that there was a fortified structure at this point in the past. Based on coin and ceramic finds, it is certain that a fortified Celtic settlement was originally located here, which was later taken over and expanded by the Romans. It became after the occupation of the Rhineland by the Romans from around 50 BC. Abandoned in the years around AD 200. It was a militarily fortified refuge for the surrounding court residents. The main components of a Roman hilltop settlement were the defense, i.e. the fortification wall with towers, and the trenches in front of it. The fortification walls were either set dry or bricked with mortar. In a site inspection from 1892, walls made of quartz stones, which were built with mortar, are reported. The interior construction was predominantly made of wood, less often in stone. Post holes and beam supports carved into the rock still clearly mark the remains of earlier wooden structures. At the foot of the plateau there are still remains of slate walls from buildings. The section trench, which today divides the mountain spur into two pieces, was created later when the hillside settlement was reduced in size. In the front area of the castle head there is a medieval melting point for iron and soft metal. Source: Text information board
