At the beginning of the 20th century, a reform movement spread throughout Germany, aiming to move away from the picturesque "promenade parks" favored by the wealthy. The goal was instead to create architecturally designed, true "people's parks," characterized by large lawns for playing and sunbathing, intimate quiet areas, flower gardens, children's playgrounds, and opportunities for sports. This ideal was embraced in 1914 by the mayor of Rüstringen, Emil Lueken, and his city planning director, Martin Wagner, who oversaw the construction of the Rüstringen City Park. The plans were drawn up by the Hamburg landscape architect Leberecht Migge. He had made a name for himself in 1911 with a horticultural exhibition in Rüstringen and subsequently won the city's competition for the design of the Rüstringen City Park. His design concept consisted of a 21-hectare, 1.4-kilometer-long canal, between 12 and 30 meters wide, bordered by a densely planted poplar avenue. At its ends, the canal was intended to widen into larger rectangular bodies of water. Promenade Bridge 250 m long (without dams), 3.50 m wide, maximum span 60 m (in the middle), clearance height approximately 7.50 m depending on water level, four viewing platforms. The substructure consists of precast concrete elements at the ends. In the middle, a steel box girder with access hatches for inspections is located over a length of 120 m. The bridge is founded on approximately 18 m long concrete piles. The pavement is made entirely of mountain larch. The railing is made of steel with a round handrail. The lake, which is around 100 hectares in size, has a large round island in the middle that can be reached on foot and by bike via a 325-metre-long promenade bridge. The bridge is architecturally interesting and striking, and is also fitted with visually appealing lights, so that you can walk along it even in the dark.

Beautiful lake to linger

The Hooksieler Binnentief is an artificial lake that was created during the expansion of the Jade shipping channel for large ships and the reclamation of the coastal section up to Wilhelmshaven.

The Hooksmeer is in an idyllic location between the "Old Harbor" and the lock at the Hooksiel Outer Harbor. Surrounded by the beach and recreational area, the Hooksmeer offers a wide range of leisure activities and invites holidaymakers and locals to actively experience and linger. The total water area is around 60 hectares and is ideal for sailing or stand-up paddling. You can also have fun on the water at the water ski lift or the surf school in Hooksiel.

The Wangermeer is an approximately 100 hectare recreational lake on the northern outskirts of Hohenkirchen (municipality of Wangerland). There is a round island measuring around 14 hectares in the lake. To connect the round island and the NLG construction area to the town of Hohenkirchen, an approximately 325 m long wooden bridge was built for pedestrians and cyclists. Platforms and rest areas invite you to linger on the bridge and turn the structure into a promenade bridge that is suitable for tourist use.
