Place name Over the centuries, the place name has been written in different ways: on maps from 1592 and 1806, the place is called "Grot Sander", in 1599 it was called "Grotesande". In 1613 it was called "Grot Sander", in 1645 it was called "Grose sander", in 1719 it was called "Groß Sander". Other spellings are "Groz-Sander" (1804), "Groß-Sander" (1818) and "Groot-Sande" (1889). Today the spelling "Großsander" is officially used. "Sand" is often used as a base word for settlements in "sandy" areas shaped by the Ice Age. The defining word "Groß-" is used to distinguish it from the place "Kleinsander" which lies about 1 km to the south.

Prisoner of war camp During World War I, the Lengener Moor prisoner of war camp was located in New England. 500 prisoners were housed in two barracks each, and they probably did forced labor in the moor. Today, nothing remains of the former camp.

History The village was first mentioned as New England in the 1793 bailiwick map. A Johann Abot and his house were also marked here. He was originally an English officer and later changed his name to Alberts. There are two different accounts of this. In another interpretation, it was assumed that New England was named after the settlement of the narrow land on the edge of the former swamp and raised moor area.

New England has a really nice refuge. You rarely see something like that.

NEUENBURGERFELD - The Neuenburgerfeld village community has been looking after the historic “Old Peat Shed” on a voluntary basis for over 25 years. Work has now been completed on an approximately 25 square meter extension, which houses, among other things, three public toilets. “We have received noticeably more registrations since the extension opened,” said the first chairman of the village community, Uwe Meinen, at the inauguration ceremony. One can only hope that the new premises are spared from vandalism, because after all a lot of volunteer work goes into building the extension. In addition to cleaning and maintaining the entire peat shed facility, the Neuenburgerfeld village community is now also responsible for the new extension with the toilets. The planning for the extension, which requires approval and is visually adapted to the old peat shed, was carried out by the building authority of the municipality of Zetel.
