Source of the Ahlebach stream. A beautiful place to rest. The hut is very inviting. Stamp station no. 30 of the "Wilde Heimat" stamp booklet of the Solling-Vogler region is located right next to the hut.

The Ahle river collects its spring water here in an artificially created spring pond before carrying it south. Just when it reaches adulthood - measured in kilometers - it is allowed to feed the Schwülme with this water before it flows into the Weser a further seven kilometers later. The Ahle is of great importance for the water balance in the southern Solling, because traditionally little rain falls here, and not just in the current dry year. The source of the Ahle, on the other hand, delivers a stable amount of water, so that the river - "Ahle" means nothing other than "small river" - forms a constant element in the local water system.

Nice place to take a break on the Nethe and Weser. The Nethe is a 50.4 km long, western and orographically left tributary of the Weser in the Oberwald region in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Höxter. Source: Wikipedia

The charcoal burner's life In March the charcoal burners went into the forest. They built a tent-shaped hut near the cabbage site. They leaned more poles in a circle on a frame made of wooden poles and covered this framework with plaster and bark. They left a hole in the top through which smoke could escape. To keep it from raining, they installed a cover over it - the “hat” or “cuckoo”. The entrance was also covered and closed with a door. The charcoal burners lived in this hut until the day of penance and prayer and led a frugal but free life. They used a bed made of sacks filled with leaves to rest. We washed at a stream nearby. The charcoal burners' work was strenuous. Every two hours, several piles had to be checked to ensure that the embers neither went out nor burst into flames. Sleeping through the night was out of the question. That's why the charcoal burners kept their work clothes on even at night. At the end of the day the 'Hillebille' sounded. A beech board hung between trees was hit hard with a wooden hammer so that the sound echoed through the forest. This is how the charcoal burners transmitted messages to each other over long distances. Source: http://www.kohlenmeister.de/seine-welt/

Maybe a small contribution to enlightenment 😄: The square is called Dreiländereck, but there is no Dreiländereck here - and there wasn't one here either! Today the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse is located here, clearly marked with a historical boundary stone. The border triangle of North Rhine-Westphalia - Hesse - Lower Saxony is located on the opposite slope of the Weser near the Skywalk. Until a few decades ago (territory exchange between North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony on the right side of the Weser), the border triangle was in the Weser. The error presumably stems from the triangular historical boundary stone. Then as now, however, this simply marks a corner of the border. At that time it was the Bishopric of Paderborn (cross) and the Landgraviate of Hesse (lion) that bordered one another here; today it is their successor states, North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.

The charcoal trade with its steaming kilns is part of the tradition and history in Solling. Charcoal burning experienced its heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries. Century, when the then blast furnace operations in Uslar, Dassel and Holzminden needed large amounts of charcoal for the smelting of iron ore. The Köhlerhütte located here is not just a resting place, it also reminds you of this chapter. Such huts, also known as "kote", served the charcoal burners as a kitchen, living room and bedroom.
