In the local language, the plot of land with the three tunnel entrances in the so-called Kupferberg has always been called the "gold hole". However, neither gold nor other precious metals have brought monetary benefits to the citizens of the island in recent times. Rather, after mining ceased in the 1930s, the tunnels served as a refuge from bombing raids in World War II and for a long time as a secret adventure playground for children. In the summer of 2015, the area was cleared by the local community. The mouths were then professionally closed and secured. The forecourt has been converted into an information center about the mines with a miner's hut. This also serves as a shelter for hikers and cyclists. The open spaces inside the hut are equipped with information boards on geology and the importance of mining for the Eifel and vividly convey the history.

Former witch hunt/execution site and current barbecue area... sounds a bit macabre at first. Past and present seem to be in flux here. In 1609, 62 people were executed there on six days of executions for alleged witchcraft.1512, among others, Simon von der Leyen, the 22nd abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Maria Laach, was allegedly murdered by a witch using poisoned cheese. In Antweiler alone, nine alleged witches were executed. Given the small population, this is a fairly high number of victims. In the dioceses of Trier and Cologne, the witch craze raged particularly cruelly. During the Thirty Years' War, the Saffenburg was repeatedly the scene of witch trials - until the witch hunters were driven out by Swedish troops in 1632.

This is more of a kind of pavilion, which is open on the sides and thus allows a free view of Altenahr and Are Castle.
