On June 26, 1866, the monument to Bavaria's King Maximilian II was unveiled at Marienfelsen at the Lechfall in Füssen. Füssen was the very first city to erect a monument to the popular monarch, father of King Ludwig II. That sounds simple, but it was preceded by numerous differences and an extensive exchange of letters, which Füssen's head of cultural affairs, Thomas Riedmiller, documented extensively from the archives for the city's museum. There was a willingness in the city to erect a monument to the king - everyone should do their part. But a monument like this - the parallels to the present are unmistakable - requires extensive consultation and the most precise examination of the material, the positioning and the design. The bust should be worthy, befitting a king and the city and its magistrate, its citizens. Ultimately, lawsuits were averted, the costs were raised and the Max monument was commissioned.
