Unfortunately, the castle prison is closed this year due to a change of tenants and renovations, but there is a great special exhibition about Dutch tiles in the museum (Sat/Sun 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.)!

One of the most beautiful views of the lake

On the castle island you can admire numerous art installations or relax and linger on the hidden benches. The atmosphere is magical and if you like, you can stop by the castle prison café. It was probably never a real prison, but the officials in question had two small cells at their disposal, in which they occasionally had overnight guests until 1927.

The beautiful natural swimming lake is being fenced in by a 2.50 m high fence. In the future, bathing will probably only be possible here with access control.

The Rantzauer See is located in the town of Barmstedt in the Pinneberg district in southwestern Schleswig-Holstein. It is almost 420 by 280 meters, has an area of 7.5 hectares and is no deeper than three meters. In the years from 1934 to 1938 the lake was dug by hand by the Reich Labor Service by order of the National Socialists. The water level of the Rantzauer See is regulated by the damming of the Krückau, which feeds it. This encroachment on nature and the associated interruption of the hiking trail for the local fish world caused problems in the past. Therefore, in 1981, a nine-step fish ladder was built on the weir of the castle island, via which the fish could continue their migration to the upper spawning grounds. The history of the castle island in the lake goes back to the 12th and 13th centuries when the Knights of Barmstede had their seat here. On the Barmstedt Castle Island there is a historical ensemble of buildings with the Rantzau Castle (classicist mansion from 1806 in private ownership), the court clerk's house (classicist building from 1824, today containing changing exhibitions), the former district court (19th century, today Museum of the County of Rantzau) and the castle prison (1836, two of the historical prison cells preserved, today café and exhibitions). The castle island is also bordered by a 19th century watermill. The Rantzauer See is visited by several thousand people every year. Around the lake there is a rhododendron park and several cafes, in the summer months there is the possibility of renting pedal boats or swimming in the outdoor pool and in the Rantzauer forest bordering the lake you can hike and cycle. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rantzauer_See

The Rantzauer See was created between 1934 and 1938. It is an artificially created reservoir in the Krückau. The idyllic castle island with artist's studio, shed (ceramic studio), museum and the beautiful, fully functional water mill invite you to visit. The castle prison with the “jail meal” should not be missed either. The best way to relax around the castle island is in the natural open-air pool, in the indoor wave pool, mini golf or boating. Furthermore, electric bikes can be rented from the boat rental to explore the area actively by cycling. The rhododendron park is a real feast for the eyes. For nature lovers, spacious hiking, biking and riding trails round off the recreational offer. https://www.vg-barmstedt-hoernerkirchen.de/Startseite/Stadt-Barmstedt/ErholORT-Barmstedt/Rantzauer-See-mit-Schlossinsel

For the castle area, the Krückau was dammed up in trenches in such a way that three islands were formed, of which the last island bearing the actual castle was also surrounded by a wall ring. Remains of this ring can still be seen today on the crescent-shaped island between the water mill and the manor house. It is not yet certain whether the entire facility was still surrounded by an outer wall. It is quite possible that there were already small islands in the river at this point of the Krückau, which were then raised to the required size; this would explain the irregular ground plan of the castle grounds as well as the distance to the center of the settlement. The individual islands existed until the 19th century and were separated from one another by drawbridges; parts of the trenches were only filled in from 1823. The castle island and those who carried the castle prison, the clerk's house and their predecessor buildings were united by backfilling the trenches. The approximate area of the palace garden is now marked by the “Rantzau” street, where remains of the former moat can be found, which today form a small pond. There was originally a bailey between the castle island and the garden, but there are no more indications of its shape. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlossinsel_(Barmstedt)
