9月 1, 2024, Moorkuhlen im Ostroher-Süderholmer Moor
The Scottish Highlanders are a peaceful breed of cattle. Everything is very slow and they don't fixate on them with their eyes. Then they get very curious. I also really liked the view of the birch forest. It may be that I'm spoiled at the moment. So I have to "earn" a hike's stars. The water areas are visited by anglers, and they drive right up to them in their cars. There are also too many tractors driving too fast on the supply routes.

Today, the landscape is characterized by a mosaic of water areas used for sport fishing, between agricultural grassland areas. The area, which is crossed by a network of paths, also includes reed beds and fen-like wet meadows.

After the Second World War, peat was mined here on a large scale to a depth of six metres. This is how the peat pits, which are today's water surfaces, were created.

As the North Sea rose after the last ice age, the groundwater level began to rise, which led to the formation of peatlands, which was accelerated by the region's basin-like valley location. A huge raised bog was created.

7月 3, 2023, Wöhrdener Loch Nature Reserve
beautiful view of the nature reserve "Wöhrdener Loch" The 495 hectare “Wöhrdener Loch” in the north of the Meldorfer Speicherkoog is one of the two nature reserves that were created to compensate for the loss of around 1560 hectares of sandy tidal flats and around 900 hectares of foreland and salt marsh areas as a result of the diking. In contrast to the southern "Kronenloch", the "Wöhrdener Loch" is cut off from the salt water flow. The aim was to create a freshwater biotope in this area as a breeding, feeding and resting place for endangered bird species. https://www.schutzstation-wattenmeer.de/unsere-stations/meldorfer-speicherkoog/nsg-woehrdener-loch/

7月 3, 2023, Kronenloch Nature Reserve
South of the new Meldorf harbor is the 532-hectare Kronenloch nature reserve. Here, for the first time, a saltwater biotope with a tidal influence was created on the west coast within a dike. In the now designated wilderness area (Natura 2000) the goal is: “Let nature be nature”. https://www.schutzstation-wattenmeer.de/unsere-stations/meldorfer-speicherkoog/nsg-kronenloch/

The nature reserve is fed by the sea water of the North Sea. It was set up in 1985. You can find out more about the Kronenloch in the NABU National Park House. While you cycle through the area on the beautifully landscaped bike path, you can enjoy the beautiful nature. Take a break and keep an eye out for the birds that make their home here.

Great idea from Büsum to give people the opportunity to swim even when the tide is low. For dog owners: Dogs are not allowed to walk across the salt marshes. So stay on the dike!

6月 23, 2021, Wöhrdener Loch Nature Reserve
From the top of the dike you have a particularly beautiful view of the NSG Wöhrdener Loch. In the north - between Warwerort and the cross road to Christianskoog, north of the Nordermeldorf bathing area, lies the Wöhrdener Loch, which has been a nature reserve since 1990 and covers an area of approx. 490 hectares. In contrast to the Kronenloch, the goal here is: open grassland, wet meadows and swamp biotopes with corresponding fauna. Because the dyke construction and the drainage of the inland led to the fact that pastureland, wet meadows, moors and swamp forests were no longer available. The animals migrated to the Speichererkoog (black-tailed godwit, ruff, snipe, whinchat). There were also lapwing, skylark and meadow pipit. This habitat can only be preserved if it is properly cared for. Water levels have to be raised and maintained, bushes have to be removed and the reeds have to be prevented from spreading through extensive grazing / mowing. The maintenance of these areas is costly and labor-intensive - but essential for the preservation of the breeding areas. Through the drainage of the inland, humans have deprived certain species of their habitat. If we want to stop the extinction of species, we have to preserve the few suitable habitats and, if necessary, maintain them accordingly. Koniks have been grazing in the Wöhrdener Loch nature reserve since 2004. They come from a nature conservation project in Holland. However, they should be removed from the area at the end of September 2020. Grazing with Koniks will therefore be abandoned. Sheep and cattle keep the vegetation in check. Different grazing animals have different feeding behavior and create different structures. In this way, different needs of different bird species can be met. https://www.bi-speicherkoog.de/seite/413278/nsg-w%C3%B6hrdener-loch.html
