Karlstein was first mentioned in 1112 as "Chadelstain." As a fiefdom, Karlstein belonged to the respective territorial princes, who granted this rule to knightly families, although no continuous dynasty established itself here. Since the castle was never owned by a single family for an extended period, it was continually rebuilt and expanded. Practically nothing remains of the original castle. In the following centuries, the border region was repeatedly raided by enemy armies (Ottokar, Hussites, Matthias Corvinus). After the suppression of the Peasants' Revolt in 1597, the leader, Andreas Schrembser, was presumably imprisoned in Karlstein Castle. In 1645, the Swedes besieged Karlstein Castle in vain. In 1663, it served as a refuge during the Turkish threat. In 1914, an internment camp was established in the castle, despite it being uninhabitable. The Montenegrin General Staff was also imprisoned there. After the war, the Hungarian communist leader Béla Kun was interned here. Later, the castle was used as a youth hostel, and in the 1960s, it also served as a guesthouse. The castle is now privately owned and no longer open to the public.

The photos were taken in the castle garden, so it's safe to use this for route planning. The best way to reach this castle by bike is from the south - otherwise you'll have to push your bike uphills for a while.

First mentioned in documents around 1450. The castle acquired its current late baroque appearance towards the end of the 18th century. Due to its location on the “old imperial route” Vienna – Prague – Berlin, the castle has always been a popular base. In 1928/1929 a chapel was built in the Expressionist style. In 1957 and 1978 the castle was taken over by the market town of Göpfritz a.d. Acquired wild and renovated. The community carried out extensive renovations between 2010 and 2015.

According to Dehio, the first documented mention goes back to the year 1454, according to other sources to 1303. Due to its location on the "old imperial road" Vienna - Prague - Berlin, the castle has always been a popular base. From 1682 to 1732 the castle was owned by the Mallenthein family and then changed hands frequently. From 1919 to 1957 it served as a Dominican monastery. It has been owned by the community since 1979 and is used as a community center and for chamber music concerts.
