The Hameau is a 464 m high hill in the 17th district of Hernals in Vienna on the border with the Lower Austrian town of Klosterneuburg. Its round summit marks the highest point in the Neuwaldegg district. The Hameau is only ten centimeters lower than the Heuberg in the Dornbach district, the highest elevation in the Hernals district. The Hameau is an elevated area in Vienna's 17th district of Hernals on the border with Klosterneuburg. It forms the highest point in the Neuwaldegg district. Originally, Count Lacy built simple huts there that served as accommodation for his guests. This area became known as the "Holländerdörfl" because a tree was planted in front of each hut in the Dutch style. The only two-story cabin was Lacy's personal quarters. After the park opened to the public, the Hameau was the only area that remained restricted. The Dutch village later fell into disrepair and was removed. During the Second World War there was an anti-aircraft gun here. In the post-war years up to the 1960s there was a forest inn on the Hameau. The Viennese visited this place on weekends to hike and ski in winter. However, with increasing automobileization, visitors drove further into rural Lower Austria, which led to the inn's closure. The shelter on the Hameau was preserved and now serves as a rain shelter. The Vienna Woods Heroes Monument was built nearby during the First World War. This piece of history gives the region a special historical significance.
