Its elevation of 4,028 metres (13,220 ft) makes it the third highest mountain pass in Kyrgyzstan after Bedel Pass and Kyzylart Pass, and the highest one that is not on a border.

It's a long, steep climb from either side, but you are rewarded with a wide, incredible jailoo bowled in by snowy peaks. There are a few yurts and streams, plenty of space to camp!

A real alpine adventure will of course be decided by a summit experience. Although neither a summit cross nor a summit book is waiting at Lake Alakul, climbing the nameless summit even gives it a certain expedition character.
