West Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Tây) is the largest lake in Hanoi, covering an area of approximately 500 hectares and with a circumference of about 17 kilometers. It is a popular recreational area and is steeped in legend: According to an ancient legend, West Lake in Hanoi originated from the victory over a malevolent nine-tailed fox spirit (Hồ Tinh). This demon dwelled in a deep cave and terrorized the people until the legendary Dragon King Lạc Long Quân intervened. After a battle lasting several days, the king caused the waters to rise, drowning the fox in its den. The cave then collapsed, leaving behind a massive crater that filled with water – the present-day West Lake, which for a long time was known as the "Fox Corpse Swamp" (Đầm Xác Cáo). This tale continues to symbolize the triumph of divine order over chaos and untamed nature.

Hoan Kiem Lake (translated as "Lake of the Returned Sword") is a central landmark in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, and a popular spot for strolling and relaxation. The lake's name derives from a legend in which Emperor Le Loi encountered a golden turtle that presented him with a magical sword. After defeating the Ming invaders, he returned to the lake, where the turtle reclaimed the sword, symbolizing peace. The revered Ngoc Son Temple (Temple of the Jade Beam) is located on a small island in the lake and is accessible via the iconic, bright red Huc Bridge (Bridge of the Sunbeam). Entrance to the temple costs approximately 30,000 VND.
