We set off in February 2024, the peak season for Buddhists, one day before the full moon at 1:00 a.m. in order to be at the summit in time for sunrise. Unfortunately we didn't make it and didn't get to the top until around 7:30 a.m. The reason was by no means a lack of fitness, but rather thousands of Buddhists who all want to visit the Buddha's footprint. With the summit in sight, we had to join an eternal queue. We finally reached the top and the view was definitely worth it

It's best to start from Nallathanniya around 2am. You should be at the summit by 5:30 a.m. at the latest to secure a spot heading east. The sun rises around 6:20 a.m. You should avoid the weekend or a day near the full moon, as it is usually too crowded and you may not reach the summit at sunrise - due to. Traffic jam in front of the summit.

If you persevere all the way - be warned this is not an easy path to hike, lots of up & down, sliding and rock climbing - but you will be rewarded with the most magnificent views

Highest point of Mihintale reached via a climb of 600 steps. 360 degree all-round panorama to the pagodas of Anuradhapura.

The path is even partially illuminated in the dark. Otherwise, take a headlamp.

Beautiful view. For foreigners it costs 900 rp to reach the viewpoint. Here is also a neat toilet and laundry room before the entrance
