Stein Castle is located in Stein an der Traun, a district of the town of Traunreut in the Traunstein district in Bavaria. It is considered the most important cave castle in Germany. The castle complex consists of three parts: the high castle on the almost 50-meter-sloping Nagelfluh wall; the cave castle below, which creates a connection to the Traun valley hidden in the rock; the lower castle in Stein itself. The origins of the high castle are not fully understood, but it may date back to Roman or Celtic times. In the 12th century, Stein was a knight's seat. The high castle, rock castle and lower castle are now part of the overall building complex of the Stein Castle Brewery, which was newly built in 1907; the Wiskott family has owned it since 1934. The lower castle in Stein has housed a boarding school, the Stein Castle High School, since 1948.
