At Elk City State Park you will find camping, water access, and numerous trail systems that wind through limestone bluffs, forests of oak and hickory, and prairie grasses. The portion of the Table Mound Trail closest to the State Park follows a difficult route along an old road for 0.15 miles, beyond which the trail becomes much easier.

At the Memorial Overlook you get an excellent view of Elk City Lake from Table Mound. This is the northern trailhead for the Table Mound Trail, which winds along the ridge before descending a bluff 0.7 miles into the trail to the forests and creeks below.

You will find three creek crossings along the Table Mound Trail. All three creeks lead into Elk City Lake, which serves as a reservoir and flood control system for the surrounding area.

Elk City Lake, or Elk City Reservoir, is dammed at its northern end where the Elk River Trail reaches its eastern terminus. The lake features six trails, two of which are nationally designated, and Elk City State park runs along its eastern coast.

The Elk River Trail is a favorite of hikers for its unique an varied terrain. The bluffs along this section are an example of the beautiful rock formations that run much of the length of the trail.

During the Cretaceous Period, the entire American midwest was a tropical inland seaway dividing North America into Appalachia and the west coast (then called Laramidia). The abundance of layered sedimentary rock formations – such as the stone shelves that line this portion of the trail – were formed by sediment falling to the ocean floor and are evidence of that ancient sea.

There are many natural stone alleys and boulder tunnels along the trail, but this is one of the largest!
