From the free parking lot, the trail started off very well on a paved path. After about 800m-1km, the trail became unpaved and muddy, with trails along the river. Difficulty: Moderate; sturdy footwear is required. There is also a paid parking lot. This would also be closer to the waterfall. But that's only half the fun.

A very nice hike in itself, BUT: mosquitoes are everywhere. It's best to wear a net over your head and face.

As of July 2024, there is a road leading directly to the waterfall. Parking costs 750 ISK for small cars, while VW buses and the like cost 2000 ISK for a maximum of 4 hours. Each additional hour costs an additional 2000 ISK, regardless of the vehicle type.

The south of Iceland hides a turquoise secret: the Brúarfoss waterfall. In the midst of untouched nature, it stands out, not because of its height, but because of the unique color of its water. When the sun is shining, it shines particularly intensely and creates a picturesque contrast to the dark volcanic rock. “Bridge waterfall” – as the name Brúarfoss is translated – tells an old legend about a stone arch that once spanned the glacial river Brúará. But the Skálholt estate manager destroyed it to keep beggars away from his land. Irony of fate: A short time later he drowned himself in the floodwaters of the river. The beauty of this place lies in the fine details. Despite its height of only two to three meters, Brúarfoss enchants with the width of its escarpment and the unusual U-turn of the water that it makes at depth. But the path to the waterfall has its pitfalls. In the past it has been impacted by careless tourists, resulting in the original trail being closed by the private landowner. Today a signposted path leads from a new car park on road 37/355 to Brúarfoss. This path is not always easy to overcome. Muddy passages and slippery sections make good footwear a necessity, and in wet weather, sturdy hiking boots are recommended rather than fine sneakers. The reward for the effort? A sight that takes your breath away. For those looking for more adventure, there is the option to extend the hike by one kilometer and visit Midfoss. This, together with Brúarfoss, offers a spectacular natural experience that you don't want to miss despite the challenges of the path. Off the beaten path of most tourists, Brúarfoss offers a rare opportunity to enjoy the raw beauty of Iceland in relative isolation. A real insider tip and for many the highlight of their trip to Iceland.
