Thank you for this refuge—luckily unlocked! There, on May 31st, we found shelter from the heavy rain showers and strong winds, were able to warm up a bit with our "trail mix" in the dry, before heading back.

A headlamp is essential because the descent is steep and slippery and it is not recommended to use one hand for your cell phone flashlight (or any other flashlight).

Beautifully located summit church. When you climb up from Pefki you think you can only reach it by climbing, but there are steep steps leading up to the back.

Beautiful mountain village, only accessible via winding roads and quite isolated. Great location directly below a large mountain range with many hiking opportunities.

Pefki is a pretty hilltop village easily accessible from Makry-Gialos by good road or on foot via the scenic Pefki Gorge. Many houses have been renovated and the residents put a lot of effort into beautiful potted plants. To stop off, there is the kafenion "Weinlaube" (the landlord speaks German, among other things) and the tavern Piperia.

Very worthwhile excursion destination, which can also be reached on foot from Pefki via a small path in just under an hour. Can be easily combined with a visit to a cave: The Vreiko Cave is relatively easy to reach, 15' from the end of the asphalt road. It has a comfortable entrance and soon stalagmites are recognizable. The ascent to the Apoloustres cave is a bit sportier. For sights you have to penetrate deeper into the interior.
