This dike road at Lock & Dam 4 runs east to the Mississippi River, with Alma, Wisconsin located on the opposite side. This area is an eBird hotspot.

Great town with a nice rest stop in the middle of the Great River Ridge State Trail. Makes it a great starting point, and you can go to one end, come back, take a break, then goto the other end.

Elgin, Minnesota, offers small-town charm surrounded by rolling farmland and rural landscapes. It’s a gateway to outdoor activities, with access to the Douglas State Trail for cycling and walking enthusiasts. The peaceful streets and friendly atmosphere make it a welcoming stop for exploring southeastern Minnesota’s countryside.

Another place that's good to have hiking poles. This one also would have been nice to have my micro spikes along for the ice.

I usually start my hikes up at the park enterance parking lot, as the gates to get down here are closed during the winter, but it's a stopping point along my hike.

Great beer, good food, awesome deck if the weather is nice, and either from the deck or the tables in the windows you have a great view of the Sothern end of Lake Pepin. Good for bird watching.

One of my favorite places to get to no matter the time of year, overlooking the campground (often empty except for my car in the winter), but with the river, trees and sky in view.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has developed a Hiking Club program that features a trail in 68 state parks and recreational areas (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks/clubs.html). Sometimes the trailhead for these hikes can be tricky to find, so here is the trailhead for the Carley State Park Hiking Club trail. There is a password somewhere along the length of the trail, but I am not going to reveal that!
