The 318-acre area features rugged, wooded inclines, small bodies of water, and wetlands. This topography is a result of the latest glacial period, which took place around 15,000 years ago. During that time, a glacier moved forward, stalled, and then receded, depositing rock and debris as a moraine at its melting edge. In the Scientific and Natural Area (SNA), this moraine is responsible for the abrupt increase of 160 feet in elevation to the west and south of Sunfish Lake.

Also known as the Portsmouth Pit, this is the deepest lake within the state of Minnesota, with over 390 feet in depth. It's possible to cycle around it, and both the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail and the Mississippi River Trail pass by it.

The Mississippi River is the second-longest river in the United States. It flows from Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico.

For those who have watched the Cohen brothers' film Fargo, you may recognize certain scenes from this 1996 cinematic hit in Brainerd. I long thought that it was largely filmed in North Dakota in unaware that the film's urban scenes were largely created here. Brainerd, which has a population of 14,400, is crossed by the Mississippi River. The old part of the city which is located east of the river has some interesting buildings.

A sea serpent sculpture that somewhat resembles the Lochness Monster welcomes you to Crosby. In this small town you will find a bicycle shop and repair shop which can be useful in the event of mechanical problems. The region owes its prosperity to the iron mines of the Cuyuna Range deposit.

This part of the MRT is located near the town of Crosby and runs along Blackhoof Lake. It operates within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area which offers numerous walks as well as mountain biking. True North Basecamp is located nearby.

A statue of Babe the Blue Ox, picnic tables, and a memorial park welcome you here. You are finding also a roadside bike stand and pump. All next to the Paul Bunyan Trail.

Gazebo, garden, some local shopping, food, coffee and full toilet facilities can be found right next to the Paul Bunyan trail. For those looking to stay overnight, there are hotels nearby but are off the trail, and require street travel.
