The hut is open every Sunday from April to October, as well as on all Thuringian holidays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If the crowds that gather up here in good weather are too much and too loud for you, it's better to go up on other days.

The Kohlbachhaus, owned by the House of Saxe-Weimar until the end of World War I, later owned by the state of Thuringia and devastated after the end of World War II. Rebuilt in the 1950s and initially used by the forestry service, it was in a restricted area from 1961 onwards and was only used for hunting by border troops and the state security service. After reunification, the building was renovated again. Today, the Kohlbachhaus is owned by the Thuringia Forestry Office and is used for staff meetings, work accommodation, as a hunting lodge and for events with forestry relevance.

Due to its location, the Kohlbachhaus has a turbulent history, which can be read on the information board on the building. Today it is used by the forestry administration. There are a few picnic tables directly in front of it, which are ideal for a rest in front of the nice half-timbered house.

Great rest area with refuge, information boards and atonement cross. The rest area also offers a beautiful view towards Wartburg.
