Güstrow Cathedral is part of the North German brick Gothic style and has a rich interior from the late Romanesque period to the modern era, including Ernst Barlach's Floating Man. It is spread out on the southern edge of the city and exudes a great sense of calm. The cathedral square is a special ensemble in the city. Here is the oldest school in Mecklenburg, the former court of Wallenstein, and within sight we find the Renaissance castle. The cathedral was founded in 1226 and consecrated in 1335. In 1568 it became the Protestant court church and burial place for the Güstrow royal family until 1695, when the Güstrow line died out. Three works by Ernst Barlach can be found in the north aisle. In 1927 he created the memorial for the victims of World War I, "Der Schwebende". This was removed from the cathedral as "degenerate art" in 1937 and melted down for armament purposes. In 1952 a second cast was made in Cologne, and in 1953 it came to Güstrow Cathedral.
