The first German driving school was founded by Rudolf Kempf as the Auto-Lenkerschule (Car Driving School) of the Kempf Private Technical College in Aschaffenburg. Its first course began on November 7, 1904. Men 17 years of age and older who could present an official certificate of good conduct were allowed to participate. Thirty-six technically gifted men – locksmiths, mechanics, and automobile dealers – from various nations participated in the first course. The training, which was not yet mandatory at the time, was intended to prepare prospective chauffeurs for their profession and, in separate courses, teach vehicle owners how to drive themselves. Kempf's driving school was welcomed and supported by automobile manufacturers, who hoped that good driver training would increase buyer interest in automobiles.
