Lovely route to ride

If only all old railways could be a good as this one. Whitstable to Folkestone on the Canterbury South is on my hitlist!!

This station has its own signal box and old-fashioned semaphore signals, which is quite interesting. The Spa Valley Railway passes through here.

Lovely off road route, great for kids. Gravel, but smooth enough and pretty level so I could cope on 23mm tyres. Also dry so ok for commute, though lots of runners and dog walkers so not the speediest. Wider tyres would be nicer for comfort though.

The ancestral home of the Sidney family and birthplace of the Elizabethan poet Sir Phillip Sidney, Penshurst Place is a grand manor set in beautiful gardens. The Spa Valley Railway currently uses a route that was originally constructed in 1868, when the LB&SCR station at Tunbridge Wells West (then on a cross-country route to Three Bridges) was linked to Uckfield by a line from Groombridge.
