No. 199 of the Thuringia stamp is located on the Saale Horizontale.

A dream, the gardens, terraces and of course the playful Rococo palace make the visit an experience.

Caution! The paths along the deeply cut riverbed are partially obscured and blocked by many fallen trees. The narrow paths are covered with loose stones and leaves. In some places, the slope edges have slipped. This section is unsuitable for hiking and dangerous! Please remove this hiking route from the Komoot platform! The routes from Neuengönna and Tautenburg to the Dornburg Castles are safe and beautiful!

After German reunification, the Old Palace was transferred to the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation on June 26, 1995. It was subsequently extensively restored with funding and has since been open to the public for pre-booked tours from April to October. Since 2004, the Old Palace has served as a meeting place for the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena.

The Renaissance palace has been used as a museum and Goethe Memorial since 1922. Around 1960, neo-Gothic furnishings from the design phase beginning in 1824, including a staircase and the furnishings of the so-called Coat of Arms Room, were removed. In the former Coat of Arms Room, wall paneling from Jena Palace, which had been demolished in 1905, was installed instead.

Below the castle there is a terrace with a great view over the Saale valley, which invites you to linger.
