The views looking over Lathkill Dale were absolutely stunning

The "Twelve Weirs" on the River Lathkill are a series of small dams constructed during the Victorian era, primarily for trout fishing purposes. Good foot wear is required . Careful in winter for flooding .

Be careful when wet limestone is slippery . Otherwise a nice walk

The River Lathkill is a winterbourne stream, it dries up over the summer. The Victorian's valued the clear water and excellent trout, so they built a series of weirs to trap the water and provide good fishing. There is a footpath through the woods on the north side of the river, allowing access and viewing of the weirs.

From the roadside at monyash all along the river its well worth a visit put it on your todo list

The Lathkill flows entirely over limestone, and as such used to become dry in the summer and during periods of low rain. The Victorians prized the river for its clarity and trout fishing, so they built 12 weirs to hold the water and maintain the fishing.

Lathkill Dale is one of the most beautiful areas of the Derbyshire Dales. The lush green countryside and stone built walls are just typical of this part of the world. Nearby, just out of sight, the Lathkill River meanders its way through the valley below through tree lined banks. The wild flowers in the summer are here in abundance, especially daisies, which form a lush yellow carpet.

Lathkill Dale is absolutely gorgeous with it’s crystal clear water that’s so clear it’s like looking into an aquarium, there is an abundance of wildlife with Swans, Ducks, Dippers and Kingfisher’s above the surface with Otters, Brown Trout and rainbow Trout below the surface, be careful if you fancy a sit down on a raised stone as the Otters leave their spraint on them 😁 I nearly sat in one, there are many places to start walking this Dale but a great one is to park in Alport village and walk to Lathkill Dale proper.

Footbridge over the River Lathkill

Very steep, narrow stone block steps from the bottom of Lathkill Dale to the Patchy Path along the top edge. Strenuous effort & mildly perilous, reasonable fitness & concentration required.

Small climb, second half is a narrow and slightly exposed path, but accessible to all.
