7月 9, 2025, Mynydd Machen Summit

Nice ascent from Crosskeys, but watch out for very overgrown pathways on the Machen side. Great views from the top!

This area is also great for some technical trail running. Plenty of footpaths meander around the hills.

Built in 1280, this castle has a fascinating life story. It is the second largest castle and grounds in UK, slightly smaller than Windsor castle. The water defenses are now home to plenty of birds and the grounds offer fantastic views of this stunning castle

Twmbarlwm is a prominent hill and archaeological site located near the town of Cwmcarn in South Wales. It is part of the Caerphilly County Borough and is known for both its natural beauty and historical significance. Here are some key points about Twmbarlwm: Key Features: Hillfort: Twmbarlwm is home to the remains of an ancient hillfort, dating back to the Iron Age. The fortifications, which include earthworks and ramparts, suggest it was a significant settlement during that period. Celtic Connections: The name "Twmbarlwm" is thought to derive from Welsh, with "Twm" being a diminutive of "Tudur" and "barlwm" referring to a mound or hill. The site is associated with Celtic history and mythology. Natural Beauty: The hill offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the nearby valleys and mountains. It is a popular destination for walkers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Archaeological Significance: Twmbarlwm has been the subject of various archaeological studies, which have revealed insights into ancient settlement patterns, defensive strategies, and daily life in prehistoric Wales. Access: The hill is accessible via footpaths, making it a popular spot for local residents and visitors. There are several trails that lead to the summit, offering a rewarding hike. Cultural Heritage: The site is connected to local folklore and legends, contributing to its cultural significance in the region. Visiting: If you plan to visit Twmbarlwm, it’s a good idea to check local resources or hiking guides for specific trails and information about the area. The site is a great way to experience the natural beauty and historical richness of South Wales.

Very helpful staff who kindly refilled our water bottles - also pointed out that on entering the main carpark there is a public tap next to the unit/toilets on the left.

A small summit above Risca. Known locally as the "Twmp" (the hump), the pimple or the nipple, due to the shape of the mound on the summit.

Caerphilly Mountain is located in the Vale of Glamorgan in Caerphilly and stands at 271 m above sea level. There are some magnificent panoramic views on offer here across Cardiff and Caerphilly, Feet, and on a sunny day, even over to Flat Home and Steep Home Islands, a pair of welsh islands lying in the Bristol Channel.

The earliest evidence of settlement at Ruperra is from between around 700 BC and 100 AD, when an Iron Age Hill Fort was constructed along the ridge of Coed Craig Ruperra. The splendid panoramic views from the top of the ridge would have given the site a strategically strong position. Defensive banks and ditches are still visible around the area of the mound, and continuing work on the site will reveal these more clearly. This hill fort lies within what would have been the tribal territory of a people the Romans called the Silures, who were a fiercely independent nation inhabiting the vale of Glamorgan, Gwent and the valleys

Built in 1626 by Sir Thomas Morgan, Steward to the Earl of Pembroke, it was one of the first of the 'mock' castles to be built in Wales.  In 2022 Cadw designated the castle gardens and park Grade II on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.

10月 11, 2022, Caerphilly Castle

Caerphilly Castle has had a £5m investment into conservation and repair of the structure - from late October '22 the scaffold and sheeting that protected the works will be removed. Caerphilly Castle is the biggest castle in Wales, and second biggest in the UK. Wales’s very own Leaning Tower, even wonkier than that of Pisa — courtesy of Civil War gunpowder is probably the castle’s best-loved feature.

7月 18, 2022, Hengoed Viaduct

The coal mining industry transformed the landscape of South Wales and one of the ways it did that was bringing about the construction of railways and, to span valleys, their accompanying viaducts. Hengoed's viaduct is vast and incredibly impressive. Thankfully, after 35 years of being completely closed, it's now a foot and cycle path, and part of the National Cycle Route 47.

7月 18, 2022, Ruperra Castle

Ruperra Castle was built in 1626 by the Steward to the Earl of Pembroke, Sir Thomas Morgan. It's actually a mock castle – a residence with a castle-like appearance rather than a fortress. Now, the castle lies in ruin and is quite something to behold.

This section of the red-rated Cafall trail is named Rocky Valley for good reason, with some swooping singletrack leading to some rock rolls and little drops as well as some rooty sections too. Its great fun for intermediate and experienced riders alike, with some interesting line choices to be had! Towards the end of this section there's a post showing two options, with an easier and more technical route. I'd suggest pausing here to go and take a look at the harder line before riding it, if that's the one you fancy. This line has a rooty drop with a narrow landing into a left-hand corner followed by a another rooty drop back onto the main line.
