As highlighted by Garrystr. There are “deep potholes” I know because I found one and punctured. Managed to get through though. With regard to lights… the torch function on your iPhone is not sufficient, go prepared. Excellent ride though.

This is a pleasant, gravelled section of the Birmingham Canal towpath which makes for a smooth cycle. The towpath goes right through the heart of the city and connects various parts of Birmingham including landmarks like Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace.

A light is a must! And the path is mostly flooded

The tunnel path is in need of a little bit of repair and there are standing puddles that are pretty deep and relatively deep potholes as well. Can still be easily ridden if you take your time. You will need lights.

A word of caution if you're heading for the Miner's Trail. The Swan Pool car park has a 2.0m metal barrier on entry, so beware your height (included any mounted bikes). The council recommends parking in Forge Mill Farm, but note that has the same 2.0m metal barrier on entry. Hopefully this will change!

Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal, in the West Midlands county, England, is part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations, (BCN). It was constructed at a 453–foot elevation, the Wednesbury or Birmingham level; it has no locks. The total length of the branch canal is 2.4 miles (3.9 km) and the canal tunnel is 9,081 feet (2,768 m) long.

Giving its name to the nearby train station, Galton Bridge was the highest single span bridge in the world when it was constructed by Thomas Telford in 1829. It now provides pedestrian and cycle access across the New Main Line Birmingham Canal to Smethwick, connecting the canal towpath and NCNs 5 and 81 via Roebuck Lane.

Bring a light

The Engine Arm Aqueduct is an iron trough aqueduct with tow path roving bridge. The impressive structure was built in around 1928 by Thomas Telford to take water from the old canal across the Telford’s new canal to feed the nearby steam pumping station. The aqueduct is Grade II-listed.

Wide bridge to sprint down

Keep on the left as you are looking down the tunnel when coming from Birmingham

A much nicer option travelling along the canal than using the local roads, plenty wide enough & tunnels are wide & clear to see while riding though with a metal barrier stopping you dropping into the canal.
