This place is well worth a visit with plenty of signs explaining the history of the quarry

Planning for the reservoir started in the 1960s and construction started in 1979. In 1984, there was a partial collapse of the dam before it was filled. The dam was removed before the construction of a new dam began in 1989. The finished reservoir was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992.

The village dates back to at least the Bronze Age. Kirk Ireton remains what it has always been, an agricultural village. Following the Second World War the number of working farms dropped from over thirty to half a dozen in the space of 40 years. Many of the former farm buildings have been adapted into houses. Much of the older part of the village dates back to the 17th century and is mostly built from sandstone, quarried locally.

This prominent rocky outcrop is an important crag in the world of climbing, and attracts rock climbers who appreciate a challenging route. It juts out from the hillside and forms a beautiful view of the valley below.

Steeple House railway station was a small station on the Cromford and High Peak Railway, located on the edge of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. It opened in 1855 for passengers and served the area until its closure in 1876. The station site is now a peaceful spot surrounded by picturesque landscapes.

Alas, the previously awesome views from the trig point are long gone due to tree growth. Today the trig point is a waypoint only; for views head over to Black Rocks.

Mountain bikes for sure and maybe the occasional gravel bike will be found atop the rocks, but likely not touring bikes. Just enjoy the view from the nice smooth gravel former railway track below.

OK, so you likely won't be riding your touring bike up atop black rocks. But should you find yourself up on the rocks the views are awesome.
