Regular passenger services on this line ended in 1954, but excursions continued until 1963. Freight continued until October of that year, the track to Ashbourne finally being lifted in 1964. The station buildings were demolished after closure but the typical LNWR signal box has been preserved as a visitor centre.

The grassland is managed as part of a working farm, and is cut for hay in mid-July - this encourages meadow flowers such as hay rattle and meadow vetchling. Different flowers grow on the rock outcrops - among them are clustered bellflower and dropwort.

Great cafe beside the trail with outdoor seating, and a bike shop next door. Coffee was superb!

Footbridge over the River Lathkill

Very steep, narrow stone block steps from the bottom of Lathkill Dale to the Patchy Path along the top edge. Strenuous effort & mildly perilous, reasonable fitness & concentration required.

It's a very interesting building, native to Croatia. It's a small, circular shelter with a conical roof. The kazun is constructed of stone only - no binding material is used in their construction.

I must of spent a small fortune at the cafe! Handily placed!

The people in the bicycle hire workshop are lovely and have lots of local knowledge.
