Calverton Colliery opened in 1952, and closed in 1993. It's legacy was a spoil tip covering 190ha, with unwanted coal deposits, including coal dust and other unsafe contaminants. In 1999 the Coal Authority and Local Authority developed an environmental restoration proposal, with major remediation works following.

Newstead Abbey, located in Nottinghamshire, England, originally served as an Augustinian priory. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it was converted into a private residence. Today, it is most renowned as the ancestral home of Lord Byron. The priory of St. Mary of Newstead, established by King Henry II of England around 1170, was a house for Augustinian Canons. Despite its present name, Newstead was never an abbey but rather a priory.

Part of Colwick Country Park, the stretch of land between the lakes and the River Trent is an interesting place to walk. You can see the boast in the mariners and the peaceful lake.
