Compositional features: the rectangular Piazza del Duomo covers an area of approximately 17,000 square meters, with buildings arranged around the Duomo, which closes the perspective on the east side, while the west side is bordered by a continuous curtain of neoclassical buildings. The north side is characterized by porticoed buildings and the imposing entrance to the Galleria, while the south side is again characterized by porticoes and the Piazzetta Reale, offset from the general layout of the area, with the façade of the Royal Palace in the background.

The image shows the public sculpture "Ago, Filo e Nodo" (Needle, Thread, and Knot), located in Piazzale Cadorna in Milan. The work was created by artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen and inaugurated in 2000. The sculpture is divided into two parts: a giant needle with a multicolored thread and, nearby, a final knot emerging from the ground. The colors of the thread (red, green, and yellow) symbolize the lines of the Milanese subway, and at the same time, the work pays homage to Milan as the fashion capital. The sculpture was commissioned as part of the urban renewal of Piazzale Cadorna, designed by architect Gae Aulenti.
