Lovely church, worth a visit

A stream was damned to create the Furnace Pond as a means to power the huge hammer at John Browne's forge. A gun foundry on such a huge scale that its flames could be seen from 10 miles away.

From here on this got very challenging. As well as hills and narrow paths MUD. Walked for a while but glad I wore waterproof hiking boots.

This spot marks the start of a Roman Road. Walking along this ancient trail reminds you that our ancestors trod the very same path thousands of years ago. Quite the thought.

Take walk through history?

It may not look like much but this is an old Roman road that once lead to the iron forge.

St Mary Magdalene’s is a distinctive church with wooden shingled spire at the heart of Cowden village. The Grade I-listed church was built in the 13th century and developed over the following 200 years. The interior is very pretty, particularly the view from the chancel to the bell turret frame, and you can observe many fittings from the 13th-15th centuries.
