Beautiful route on the Wall Trail

On the riverside path along the Havel there are several steles with historically interesting themes. This one is about the lives of two men who died in connection with the former wall.

Between 1961 and 1989, at least 140 people were killed at the Berlin Wall alone or died in direct connection with the GDR border regime. In addition, at least 251 travelers died during or after checks at Berlin border crossings. Countless people died out of grief and despair over the effects of the construction of the Wall on their lives. The Berlin Wall Memorial, the Parliament of Trees, the Wall Memorial in the Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus and other memorial sites that were built in West Berlin between 1961 and 1989 now commemorate the victims of the Berlin Wall. Along the Wall Trail, memorial steles mark the places of death where people were killed or lost their lives while attempting to escape or in connection with the border regime.
