The chapel is a listed building and is one of the sights on the Schusteracht cycling and hiking trail.

In 1962, the chapel became the property of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Preetz, which, like the Kiel Mennonites, uses the chapel for services approximately once a month. Below the chapel, on the opposite slope, is the Johanssen family mausoleum, later built by the son of the architect Scheele.

The chapel's entrance area consists of a vestibule with three open arcades, above which are inscribed the inscriptions "Glory to God in the highest" and "Retreat to the wanderer." The central building is designed as a trefoil choir, surmounted by a dome. In the center of the choir, on a marble pedestal, stands a baptismal angel, created for the chapel by Eduard Lürssen.

The chapel was built in 1873 in the Byzantine round-arch style, as is common in the Russian Orthodox Church. The Lübeck merchant Nikolaus Johanssen, owner of the Sophienhof estate, commissioned the chapel to be built by the Riga architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829–1909) – modeled on the Russian churches in the Baltics, which he knew from trade relations. The Russian church in Baden-Baden also served as a model.
