The monastery was founded between 1002 and 1008 by Countess Wichburg, wife of Count Ottwin von Sonnenburg (Pustertal Valley), as a Benedictine monastery. It was built on the site of a church dedicated to St. George and consecrated in 1023 by Archbishop Hartwig of Salzburg. The collegiate church, a Gothic church, now serves as the parish church of the local community. The monastery served as a palace until 1884 and has since been used as a school, educational center, and hotel. The monastery complex, as a Baroque ensemble, is a listed monument.

Maria Wolschart, located east of the Carinthian federal highway in the middle of the once feared Wolschart forest, is a small pilgrimage church. The location, which today consists of two houses and the church, was first mentioned in documents in 1458 as "Woleschart". This name is probably derived from an old German word that means something like "wolf forest".
