The bobsleigh track of Lago Blu was built in the wake of the Italian successes at the 1956 Olympics. The work was more difficult and longer than expected due to some changes to the initial project and rocks to be cleared; the final costs were 95.4 million lire against the 55 estimated. The track became operational in the winter of 1962/63 with the inaugural descent of the Olympic champion Eugenio Monti aboard the bobsleigh with which he won silver at Cortina '56. Despite great enthusiasm, it was a false start: in the summer of 1963, some construction defects were found and the subsequent collapse of a curve led to its closure pending repairs. The new and actual inauguration took place in 1966, this time everything went well and the track established itself by hosting many international competitions, including 4 world championships, 4 European championships, 17 Italian championships and several stages of the World Cup; at the same time it promoted the practice and from the bobsleigh school athletes emerged capable of winning Olympic medals. In 1991 Cervinia was designated to host the world championships for the fifth time, in 1993, and included in Aosta's candidacy for the 1998 Winter Olympics, but in an instant the possible apotheosis turned into a collapse: the Olympics were assigned to the Japanese city of Nagano and the Aosta Valley track was closed due to high management costs which also led to the cancellation of the '93 World Championships. Of the track, now abandoned, Lago Blu di Cervinia nothing remains but the melancholic reinforced concrete skeleton, decorated with murals in the final stretch. A very evocative place, which recalls the sporting feats of athletes of great courage.

Path to climb to Breuil-Cervina, you have the road and at the bottom you have an easy path that goes directly to Breuil-Cervina, path that was unfortunately damaged by bad weather but the municipality quickly did some work to redo the path. With a view of the Golf and if you go back up and cross the road you will find a hotel and a picnic area that overlooks a blue lake. Very pretty.

The legend of Lago Blu says that long ago, where the Blue Lake is today, there was a small house where a family of shepherds lived. One night, a poor traveler came to visit and knocked on their door, seeking food and shelter. The young shepherdess turned him away, but her son could not bear the thought of this selfish act. He tried to give the traveler his own bowl of milk, but his parents did not allow it and gave the man a bowl of dirty water instead. The parents even punished their son for going against their will and sent him out into the forest that very night to collect wood. He managed to collect a lot of wood without being attacked by wild animals, and when he returned home, he was horrified to find that his house was no longer there. A lake had swallowed him and with him his entire family. As the boy grew up and started his own family and village, they were known to be friendly, hospitable people who always welcomed strangers. The Blue Lake (il Lago Blu), also known as Lake Layet, is located in the Breuil-Cervinia region of the Aosta Valley and lies south of the Matterhorn. It sits at almost 2,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by larches. It is not a large lake, but what makes it so special is its bright color. Supposedly, the deep blue is the merit of both the algae and mineral content, and the clarity comes from the fact that it is constantly fed by freshwater springs. As soon as you arrive in the small tourist town, you are greeted with, among other things, a beautiful panorama. The beautiful place encourages a relaxing visit. If you want to take the cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn and are looking for free parking, you will find it a little above the town, in the immediate vicinity of the cable car station.
