After initially being privately owned and serving as a boarding school for the Sisters of the Christian Doctrine (1851–1950), Château de Wiltz was acquired by the Luxembourg state in 1951 to establish an integrated retirement home, which was run by the Carmelite nuns until 1985. The actual, first castle of Wiltz was located in Niederwiltz, where the deanery church stands today.
