This fortress was expanded by the Hospitallers in the 14th century and was considered one of the most powerful in the area. Interestingly, stones from ancient Kos, which was destroyed by an earthquake in the 6th century, were used to build it. Quite recently, this fortress was separated from the city by a moat, but in the 20th century it was filled in to make way for an avenue with palm trees. Unfortunately, the castle ruins are not currently open to visitors. All we can do is enjoy the bridge leading to it, from which there are some pretty cool views of the Aegean Sea. The cannonballs lying by the road, visible from here, are from the Middle Ages.

The street has been faithfully restored to its original appearance during the time of the Order of St. John. Unlike all other tourist streets in the city, there are no souvenir shops or restaurants here. This makes it particularly worth seeing.
