The so-called Luther House is one of the beautifully renovated half-timbered houses on this square.

The impressive half-timbered house was built around 1520. Martin Luther stayed here in February 1537 for the most important meeting of the Schmalkaldic League and published his Schmalkaldic Articles. The permanent exhibition "Making a State with Faith - Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous 1504-1567" can be seen in the so-called Luther Apartment. The Hessian Landgrave was a leading political pioneer of the Reformation, co-founder of the Schmalkaldic League and introduced the Reformation in Schmalkalden as early as 1525. Luther stayed in this house for a few days during his stay at the meeting of the Schmalkalden League in 1537. The house has been lovingly restored and today houses a bookstore.

In 1865, the Elisabeth School was built between the inner and outer city walls as a 'higher girls' school', consisting of the school building, the gym and a school yard with sports facilities. Rebuilt several times and used for different purposes, the building ensemble is now in private hands and was completely renovated and reopened in 2015 as an old school. It is now a place for conferences, dance training and social highlights.

Heinrich Hagen was born as the son of the Hanover building officer Heinrich Hagen and his wife Amalie Gebhard. After graduating from the Hanover Lyceum in 1876, he studied political science and law at the universities of Leipzig, Berlin and Göttingen, where he received his doctorate on August 1, 1879. legal graduated. After a period of employment in the district offices of Heiligenstadt and Mühlhausen, he came to the Breslau district government as a government assessor after passing the major state examination in 1885, where he became a government councilor in 1891. In the same year, he first became acting district administrator in Schmalkalden, until he finally became district administrator here on July 14, 1892. He remained in this office until July 1919, when he retired at his own request for health reasons. From 1894 to 1897 he was a member of the Kurhessian municipal parliament of the administrative district of Kassel, from which he was appointed deputy of the provincial parliament of the province of Hesse-Nassau. Here he was a member of the main committee. In 1899 he was chairman of the supervisory board of the Trusebahn-AG-Wernshausen-Herges-Vogtei.
