The cave hyena (Crocuta crocuta spelaea) often used caves as its home, the proverbial "hyena cave" or hyena nest. It is also called the Ice Age spotted hyena because it is a paleo-subspecies of the spotted hyena, a subspecies that is now extinct and lived in Eurasia during the last Ice Age. They brought dead animals and carrion into the caves and ate them there. Therefore, the bones of many animals can be found in such caves, even those that would never come into the cave on their own.
